Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults, with 1/3rd of those who fall never returning home1. Falls are the leading cause of injury deaths, hospitalizations, emergency department visits, and disability across all age groups for
individuals aged 65+2.

In Alberta, falls are the leading cause of injuries amongst older adults3. The average length of stay in an Alberta hospital due to a fall is 3 weeks4. In Alberta, there is an average of 92 fall-related emergency department visits, with 25 of those resulting in hospital admissions, each day4.

Following these steps can help prevent slips, trips, and falls so that you can keep enjoying the fun things in life!

1. MOVE your body5

  • Build your balance, strength, and flexibility with regular physical activity
  • Enhance your stability and coordination with activities such as walking,swimming, or Tai Chi
  • Increase the intensity of your physical activity over time to build strong muscles

2. IMPROVE your health5

  • Review medications regularly with your healthcare provider or pharmacist and discuss any side effects, such as feeling dizzy or sleepy
  • Keep up your social activities
  • Routinely clean your teeth and gums so you can eat a nutritious diet
  • Check your eyesight and hearing regularly

3. REMOVE hazards5

  • Keep your floors clutter free
  • Install grab bars in the bathroom
  • Use handrails and turn on lights on all staircases
  • Wear well-fitting and supportive footwear inside and outside
